Khan Bahadur Muncherji Cowasji . Murzban, CLE.

He was in the P. W. D. from 1857 to 1893 when he became Executive Engineer to the
Municipality. In 1890-91 he was President of the Corporation
and in 1906 was Sheriff of Bombay. Murzban is a Persian
word and originally meant a guardian of the frontiers, a name
given to the " lords of the marches " under -the Sassanian Empire.
[Mr. Murzban derives his family name
from his great grandfather Murzban Kaoos Munjam (1763-1822) the founder
of the family ].
He played a key role in designing, supervising, and executing a number of important civic buildings in the late Victorian era.
At the same time, Murzban also engaged in private philanthropic work in service of his com-munity.
He was actively involved in several Parsi charities,
designed and built a hospital for Parsi women,
and constructed housing colonies for poorer members of the community.
Murzban’s abilities as an engineer, his facility in nurturing mentors,
the wide range of official activities he undertook that made him indispensable to the colonial elite, his role as an intermediary between the government and Parsi philanthropists, the prominent association of his family with social reform, and his membership in Masonic lodge hall contributed to his success
Mumbai`s Murzban Road in the Fort , Area is named after him ,
as he lived in the vicinity !
