Many Friends ask me -
"What is the meaning of your last name
********************************************
/ family name / surname " ?
*******************************
Here goes >
My Dear friends ,
after 1000 A.D. the Rajas & Maharajas in the Deccan organised their land recording system & Collection of taxes on these lands !
The village clerk who performed this job of maintaining the record books and collecting the tax on behalf of Raja was called -
Kul + Karnik = writer of owners of lands or their tenants !
Sanskrit Kul means a family
&
Karan means to write !
This was the lowest post & the Kulkarni was given one /two ./ three villages to look after .
Deccan,including North Karnataka & Goa
always had these Kulkarnis & even Portuguese rulers continued them ! Over these 50 to 60 Kulkarnis was an officer who looked after a Taluka / Tehsil . Mahal - who was called Deshpande = Desh means region & Pande means Pandit / a learned gentleman !
This one controlled fairly large area !
All the Kulkarnis under him had to deposit their collection with him ! & he would check their record books , too ! Any change /transfer /sale of any land - he had to approve & sign & stamp !
Over about 20 to 25 such officers - Deshpandes , was the chief Officer - The Commissioner of land records & taxes of the Revenue Department !
He was called Sarv + Desh + Pandit -
meaning > Sarv = Entire !
He was above all & was responsible for the records ,revenue collection of the entire Kingdom !
Any Land Dispute / Property dispute ,his ruling was the FINAL !
In North Karnataka & the Canaras these three were also called
as >
a. Kulkarni or Shanubhog
b. Nadukarni > Nadkarni [ Nadu means Desh ]
c. SarDeshKulkarni or SarNaduKarni
[ but these last two are extinct long long ago ! !
*************************************************************************
Yours Truly,
comes from this historic family of
SirvDeshPandit > Sir Desh Pande !
Our Historic Family Served under the Raja/Maharajas of
Kalyani CHALUKYA Rajas [ now Basav Kalyan, in Dist.Bidar ].
Devagiri YADAV Rajas [ now Doulatabad, near Ajantha Verul /Elora ]
Vijaynagar RAYAs/Rajas [ now Hampi in Dist. Ballari/Bellari ]
as the Chief Commissioner of Revenues
for many generations until around 1850
when the invading Britishers
replaced these Hereditary Officers
by their own
British
I.C.S. Officers !
